Center for Kidney Research and Therapeutics Funding Announcement

November 3, 2016 - 5:00pm
Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute - Northwestern University
About This Event:

The Center for Kidney Research and Therapeutics of the Feinberg Cardiovascular Research Institute was recently established to promote cross-disciplinary translational research with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapies for patients with kidney diseases.  Through the current funding opportunity we aim to catalyze collaborations between basic and clinical investigators on campus to begin to identify novel therapeutic targets and to define the phenotype of patients in whom potential novel therapies could be tested.

This funding opportunity aims to fund pilot and feasibility studies focused on the identification of novel therapeutic targets and subpopulations of patients in whom novel therapies could be tested. Successful pilot and feasibility studies will serve as a basis for subsequent applications for independent research support. Typical awardees will either be early stage investigators or established investigators who are pursuing new research directions related to advancement of novel therapeutic discoveries in the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases. Applications focused on the following areas below will be accepted for review:

  • Applications proposing studies of novel targets for the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases;
  • Applications proposing studies aimed at identifying subpopulations of patients with kidney diseases that may benefit from targeted therapies;

Eligibility and Scope of Applications

Both basic and clinical research investigators with an M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent, and have a faculty position within Northwestern University are eligible to apply.  Investigators need to justify how the proposed studies relate to the broad area of therapeutics and the two specific objectives of this announcement.  Preliminary data is encouraged but not crucial.

Applications that foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and collaborations between basic and clinical researchers with an immediate translational value are particularly encouraged.

Application Instructions

The proposal section should be in MS Word format, 3 pages maximum. This section should include a project description, specific aims, proposed research, expected outcomes, and connectivity to the mission of this funding opportunity.  Additional information to accompany the application (but outside the 3-page limit) should include: investigator biosketch, project timeline, and budget.

Key Dates

Completed applications are due no later than November 3, 2016.

Budgets must be well-justified and may not exceed $50,000 in total costs. Budgets should be for one year in duration.

Requirements of Awardees

Awardees are required to submit an interim progress report six months after receiving funding. A final report of the study’s findings must be submitted twelve months after receiving funding. Awardees will present their findings at Kidney Research Day after the conclusion of the pilot study.
